HMSD 101_HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN PNG_ Semester 1, 2025
This unit gives students a general overview of the organisation and financing of Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) healthcare systems. It focuses on key components of the PNG health system, including its historical development, the integration of government and church health services, and the implementation of the National Health Plan.
Students examine critical healthcare delivery factors, such as accessibility, resource distribution, and system reform. Through case studies and in-depth discussions, they Analyse challenges within the system and explore strategies for improvement. The unit also includes a comparative analysis of international healthcare systems, enabling students to develop a global healthcare delivery and policy perspective.
With the guidance of experienced teaching staff, students engage in activities that foster critical thinking, collaborative learning, and practical application of theoretical knowledge. By the end of the unit, students are expected to thoroughly understand health system structure, financing models, and reform strategies relevant to PNG and beyond.
