PG324 PNG History

2025 PGIS3 students,

Welcome to PG324 PNG HISTORY,. My name is Alois Ralai, you can call me Mr. Ralai. I will be your lecturer for this unit in this semester.  I hope we have an enjoyable and great fun time together to study PNG's history and how the past has informed or determined what it is like today.

This unit is about the country’s history and culture. It will examine and discuss the achievements of ancestors, the colonial experience, and the most recent developments of the post-independence period. You are to look at the experience and implications of being colonised, and the ways in which villagers, who became ‘Papuans’ and ‘New Guineans’ in the process of colonisation, were changed by the ideas, images, and institutions imported by the colonisers. You are encouraged to appreciate the struggles and the historical context through which PNG became a sovereign nation state. You explore your own identity as a Papua New Guinean and your own position as a mediator between cultures that are often still in conflict with each other.

Please be attentive, participate well and learn as much as you can through discussions.

Thank you,

Mr. Ralai
