This unit enables students to explore the basic principles of developing research questions, testable hypotheses and study objectives; define ratios, proportions and rates, and explain the differences between them; calculate incidence and prevalence, and use both direct and indirect methods for standardizing mortality rates. Students study the distribution and determinants of disease in specific populations, and the application of this knowledge to the evaluation of and control of health problems in the community. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be used to support the teaching and learning in this unit.

The unit presents an overview of the two research paradigms; the quantitative and qualitative. It exposes students to research topic construction, hypothesis/research questions, literature reviews, research instruments, data collection, management and analysis; both descriptive and statistical/interpretations and developing various stages of the research proposal. All the work covered in this unit will culminate into the production of students’ individual research proposals and gaining ethics approval to collect data. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be used to support the teaching and learning in this unit.
